Work Begins on Lenox Road Complete and Safe Street Section I
Big changes are happening on Lenox Road near the MARTA station – and they’re just the start of a complete transformation of the entire corridor from East Paces Ferry to Piedmont Road. In 2017, a community-wide planning effort created a vision to remake Lenox Road into one of Atlanta’s most distinctive and identifiable corridors. That vision is now the Lenox Road Complete and Safe Street project, and Section I of the work is underway.
Over the next 13 months, we will create the Lenox Boardwalk, a 12-foot-wide multi-use path that enhances pedestrian connectivity and improves the visual aesthetics of the area between the Lenox MARTA station and Peachtree Road. The first visible step in that process begins this week as crews take out several unhealthy trees, as well as trees whose root systems would have been permanently damaged during construction.
As the boardwalk project progresses, we will plant a variety of large, native trees including dogwood, tulip poplar, laurel oak, red oak and American Elm. Other plants will be added as a barrier between passing traffic and people walking or biking on the boardwalk, greatly enhancing the area’s appearance and increasing its overall appeal.
Section I of the Lenox Road Complete and Safe Street project is just the beginning of a complete makeover that includes reimagined ramps at Monarch Drive in Section II, and a reconfigured interchange at GA400 that includes a flyover pedestrian and bike bridge in Section III. Collectively, these enhancements will improve pedestrian and vehicular mobility, creating Buckhead’s next great signature corridor.
