What You Need to Know about the Super Bowl LIII in Buckhead
Super Bowl LIII is coming to Atlanta next month, attracting more than 1 million people. This significant event for the City of Atlanta will require the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to increase its presence around events surrounding Downtown Atlanta. As a result, there will be no off-duty APD officers at Buckhead intersections during lunch or post-work peak hours starting Monday, January 28 through Monday, February 4.
Although we are temporarily removing traffic officers, 20 officers are expected to be sent to Buckhead to help direct traffic, and traffic signals have been timed to maximize efficiency, said Amy Patterson, the vice president of operations and logistics for Atlanta’s host committee for Super Bowl LIII, who recently spoke at a Buckhead Business Association breakfast. The committee has also hired a team of officers and fire marshals to monitor Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square Mall.
There are no specific Super Bowl organized events in Buckhead, but traffic will be heavy with private events, and visitors staying in and exploring the area. One of the NFL teams in the season’s ultimate match-up playing is expected to reside at the JW Marriott Buckhead Atlanta and The Shops of Buckhead is hosting a fashion show by the Off the Field Players’ Wives Association on Feb 1.
If you are planning to drive in Buckhead during Super Bowl weekend, please do not block the intersections, put your phones down and pay attention. If you are able, we strongly encourage you to use MARTA or the BUC. MARTA is prepared for the crowds and plans to increase security and operate 24 hours a day from Feb. 1 at 4 a.m. until Feb. 5 at 2 a.m., according to its website. They are also selling commemorative Super Bowl Breeze cards (1-day, 2-day or 4-day pass) at www.breezecard.com or you can purchase one at a station.
