Coming to an Intersection Near You: Walking Paths, Bike Lanes and a $1 Million Pocket Park
A few weeks ago we kicked off a project to completely remake the intersection of Wieuca Road and Phipps Boulevard. When the Wieuca Road at Phipps Boulevard roundabout is completed in November 2025, everyone will enjoy a safer, more pedestrian and driver-friendly route through one of Buckhead’s busiest intersections.
While the project name is focused on the roundabout, the project itself includes much more than circular lanes for vehicle traffic. We are also creating:
- Eight-foot-wide pedestrian walkways to provide safer pedestrian access in the area
- Two-way bike lanes along the northern edge of the intersection
- A $1 million renovation of North Buckhead Park including a central green space, recycled granite curb walkways and a beautiful landscape featuring plants native to the Georgia Piedmont
- A new, signalized intersection at Old Ivy Rd. and Wieuca Rd.
If you live or work near this area, you have likely noticed the removal of several trees — an unfortunate but necessary first step to create a safer, more attractive intersection. While we are working on the roundabout, our partner Livable Buckhead is continuing its great work on PATH400 and will benefit from our tree removal. How? A signature feature of the Atlanta Tree Protection Ordinance is “recompense,” which recoups some of the lost public value when trees are removed. In this case, recompense will be satisfied by the in-kind planting of trees along PATH400. Eventually there will be new trees in and near the roundabout. In the meantime, PATH400 gets new trees along its northern trail segment. A win-win!
Keep checking back here for project updates, and also be sure to sign up for traffic alerts to help you avoid construction areas in Buckhead.
